Daffodil Fields Session | Portrait Photographer, WA

March 16, 2018

I just have to say how excited I am that Spring is finally here! I've wanted to create something beautiful with daffodil fields for over three years now but it never worked out. Either the weather was bad, such as rain, or the timing was off.

I almost missed an opportunity to do it this year as well. It is so hard to predict when daffodils would be blooming. It all depends on the weather. Once the flowers bloom they only last about a week, before they are cut down.

This time I followed Skaggit Valley Tours on Facebook to make sure I didn't miss out on daffodil's blooming time. And it worked! I noticed a picture they've posted with daffodils full in bloom!

There was one problem. The weather. It didn't look good for this week. I only had two good days in order to do the session. I had to find a model who was willing to travel three hours each way on a short notice.

I didn't think I would be able to make it work. Alas, came Zoe Brown to the rescue! She didn't mind the distance nor the short notice. Her mom Pamela Brown is amazing with make up and hair and volunteered to do just that. I couldn't believe my luck!

Zoe is a beautiful sweet girl. She is a natural when it comes to posing and endured the cold weather like it was nothing. Follow her on Facebook here.

The drive to the daffodil fields was brutal! We even left early trying to avoid rush hour traffic, but it was too late. I'm not going to bore you with details of our actual drive.

I wanna talk about the session now.

When we got there it got cold and very windy. I didn't mind the wind, I actually preferred it. Ads so much drama to the pictures.

I already had a vision of what I wanted. I wanted a blue dress, because blue is complimentary to yellow, and I wanted a beautiful sunset glow.

I knew that I was going to do a composition, you know add in the sky to make for a dramatic, dreamy feel. You probably noticed that the sky has blue and yellow colors in it, helping to tie in the whole image together.

I wanted to capture a relationship between a beautiful girl and her love of flowers. Instead of daffodils being just a beautiful backdrop, I wanted them to be an interactive part of this session.

For all of the shots I had Zoe in front of the sun, to create a beautiful glow in her hair. This leaves the light pretty dull and boring on the face, so I did a lot of dodging and burning to add some depth to her face, to keep it from looking flat.

I don't use flashes, lights, or reflectors. Mainly because they are so difficult to carry around, and because it messes around with background too much. I much prefer to fix the light in post processing. It's a lot more work, but images come out much softer and subjects flow with the surroundings much better.

My goal with all the pictures is to turn them into works of art. This takes a lot of time, some of my images take 5 hours to create.

I'm really happy with how they all turned out. Beautiful Zoe did such a great job on capturing the sweet nature of this session, the light was perfect and the background absolutely breathtaking. I couldn't be happier.

Huge Thanks to:

Zoe Brown for modeling on such short notice and doing a great job!

Pamela Brown for willing to do make-up and hair, you nailed it!

Trudiestreasurehutz for providing a beautiful dress for this session. It is available for purchase!
